I am Djenaba Gregory-Faal and I participated in the first leg of the Trek for African Centered Education Walkathon.

Marching onwardI walked 20 miles from West Palm Beach to Martin County, the northern county line.

It was, by far, the most grueling physical test I have ever experienced - but I wouldn't trade it for anything easier.

We started with about 40 people, 3 or 4 generations of educators and children chanting "Walk Baba Walk!"   The group got smaller gradually and at the 10 mile point, there was a dozen or so of us left.

We made it to the county line 20 miles away--I was last, but happy all the same, since it wasn't a race but an affirmation.    There was a van that scouted for us and waited at key areas ahead for a cool place to sit, drink our water, or eat our stacks that each of us had brought.    Baba Amefika was incredible throughout.   He had a pace that smoked every one else.   He was focused and determined.   It was clear he was on a mission with a true purpose.    The elder council, Baba Shabaka, Baba Kwame and Baba Amefika also just smoked the younger ones in pace, determination, and endurance.    True BLACK MEN, every one.   The younger we were, the more we seemed to lack what they had.     My humble suggestion:  if you can find a way to walk WITH Baba Amefika or know of people who might walk with him, please find a way to connect.   It's truly a Blacknificent experience. Sister Djenaba

Brother Mawusi Hazard was released from the hospital on Wednesday morning to join Baba Geuka, Mama Dawson and The Send-Off Walkers and others.

Walking buddies“I got my doctor’s release signature just in time to meet those who walked the first leg from the school and those continuing on the Trek to Martin County. Being on that corner of 45th Street  and Corporate Way with Bettye Dawson, Baba Geuka, JLNSCS staff, parents, students , future students, and JLNSCS supporters was some-what of a reunion of the 3 surviving founders of JLNSCS.  Our historic past present and future was engulfed in collective emotion on that corner.  It was a tear jerking moment.”

“With help from a few others, we drove the support vehicle as far as Stuart, Fl. in Martin County. Mr. G step off at a brisk paste and kept it for about 32 miles. He wore us out getting to Martin County. He Treked right along as though DC was just up the road.”

“ I went on with Baba G, Mama Neptune, Emmanuel Rolls, Alex Aougadjan Jeanty, Kwame Afoh, Akbar owner of Pyramid Books, Sister Djenaba Gregary Faal, Sababu Shabaka, and Diriki Geuka to the County Line… And, Yes, I did my share of walking.... I also drove the entourage until they settled in a hotel for a nights rest... Diriki, Alex and myself.... left Mr. Geuka, Ms. Neptune, and Kwame Afoh in Stuart Fl...  I will rejoin him further along up the coast...sometime Thursday with a video camera. I will go the rest of the way to DC.”
